Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA)

A disease involving the destruction of red blood cells by the dog's own immune system is one of the most common blood disorders affecting dogs today. So far the major cause for autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is annual immunization but is only one potential cause for this condition.

After losing our beloved mascot "Bo" to this disease ourselves, we decided to research the subject further.  We feel that it is an important topic that does warrant consideration, however we here at So. Cal. Keeshond Rescue are not veterinarians.  All cases are different and these articles are not meant for diagnosis or treatment of the problems.  If you have any specific concerns or questions regarding your pet, they should be addressed to your family veterinarian.

The following articles provide detailed explanations of AIHA in terms of the disease process, diagnosis and treatment of AIHA.
